Nannen Arboretum Society Inc. Trustee Meeting

Meeting was called to order at 11: 30 by Steve
Members present were Steve Ward, Ed Chapman, Gretchen Plough, Mike Braun, Laurie Barrera, Diane Smith, and Paul Timkey
Also present, Pat Milks.
Minutes of June 9, 2025 meeting were approved.
Meeting Agenda was reviewed
Presentations: none
Treasurer’s Report: Laurie handed out profit loss statements showing deposits and money spent. Motion by Gretchen / Ed to approve report. Carried.
Committee/ Project Reports: none
Technology: Nothing new to report.
Tree Mapping and Signage: a new donation sign for entry along with introduction to Plantsoon will be obtained and placed near donation box. Steve will contact Carol Fisher about doing article on the arboretum and Plantsoon.
Tree maintenance and Pruning Plan: Mike and Steve made an updated list of the trees that need to be pruned. Volunteers will prune some. Steve will contact Bradley’s to get an estimate on ones that need professional trimming.
Ground and infrastructure Maintenance:
Water supply Al Cox area:
Pond looks better after water treatment was done with muck buster. Alge is better.
Pond depth was discussed.
A motion was made by Laurie / Mike to purchase a solar fountain for the pond. Carried
Town of Ellicottville will be asked about diverting some water into the pond from the northern border diversion ditch
Electric at Northrup area has not been repaired yet. Steve will look into this.
Steve talked to the lawn trimmers today, asking them to not get so close when trimming.
They are getting too close to the non-mulched trees and need to stay at the edge of the mulched ones.
Communication: nothing new.
Picnic for the volunteers will be held on 7/21/25 at noon. Dishes to pass will be brought.
Steve will take the task board in the shed home to review and update.
Education / speakers: Education for adults and kids. Merle (Bradley Tree) has offered to do a program this fall
Community Relations / Programs:
Rebecca Szpaicher will set up an art class in arboretum mid-August.
5TH grade program went well.
Memorial Program: nothing new
Ellicottville Town /Village Boards: Presentation on Plantsoon will be done in the fall
Field Trips: Possible trip to Cornell Arboretum or Cleveland Arboretum. Mike will get information. Allegany State Park is in the beginning stage of setting up an arboretum and would be a good field trip.
Tree Wish List
Mike would like a Red Maple planted on Arbor Day next year.
Unfinished Business
Dwarf Conifer Collection: Steve will contact Mark Chudy again about moving rocks.
Pollinator Garden Area: traffic in this area is still an issue. Steve is working on it.
Message Board: Steve will change to “Ticks” and fall “bulb Planting”.
Pet Waste Container – Mike will empty it today.
Dogwood Collection: Bed was cleaned out by Steve.
There was a discussion on overgrown gardens and where to purchase bulk top soil.
Group B Tourism: Tabled till next meeting.
Donations: nothing new.
Herb Garden: lots of work needs to be done with thinning the garden.
Steve submitted the NY Study of Public and Private Museums grant application which includes arboretums.
