September will be a busy month at the Nannen Arboretum. We are very excited to have David O’Donnel, President of the Eastern Monarch Butterfly Farm from Clarence NY, as our speaker on Wednesday, July 20, 2017 at 6:00 pm. Through presentations, education, butterfly releases, and native plant distribution, Eastern Monarch Butterfly Farm is changing the way we view our landscaping. The Monarch Butterfly is a symbol of nature in America, a symbol of clean water, clean air and natural habitat. Pollinators are essential for helping to make the food we eat every day. You will learn how you can help protect, conserve and restore our natural native plants, wildlife and environment. There is a nominal charge of $5 to cover the cost of the speaker. This is our third session in our quarterly education series: spring, summer, fall and winter. The spring session, Pruning, was held earlier this year in March, Growing and Cooking with Herbs was held in July. We’ll finish out 2017 with Nan Miller and Cheri Reed presenting Greenery and Wreath Making on December 6, 2017.All sessions take place at 6:00 pm in the Ellicottville Town Center building adjacent to the Nannen Arboretum, 28 Parkside Drive, Ellicottville, NY.

Be sure and check out the pollinator friendly demonstration gardens at the arboretum directly behind the Town Center building. You will see red signs and green signs identifying the annual and perennials in the 3 gardens beds. Red signs indicate plants that butterflies use for nectar. Green signs indicate plants on which butterflies lay their eggs; then the caterpillars eat the plant before they pupate. Monarchs lay their eggs on milkweed, Tiger Swallow Tails on parsley and Fritillaries on violets. These demonstration gardens are a great place to bring the whole family and learn more about how to attract butterflies and other pollinators.

The annual Walk in the Arboretum is scheduled for Sunday, September 24, 2017, 12:30 – 3:30. Guided tours are provided covering various features throughout the arboretum: Crab Apple Collection, Confer Collection. Carolyn Lowe Herb Garden, Lake Nipponica, Japanese Stone Garden, Chapman Nature Sanctuary and Al Cox Garden, Northrup Nature Hall and the Pollinator Demonstration Garden. Musicians will entertain you along the way and refreshments will be provided on the patio. The walk will be held rain or shine.

We recently installed our first memorial bench made of maintenance free ‘polywood’ and will be installing a second one soon. The bench is 5 feet long with a back and side arms. A poly plaque with your custom message is included. You can see the new style bench on the hillside above the pond at the bridge end of the pond.
