SUMMARY:CANCELLED DUE TO CORONA VIRUS PANDEMIC - Arbor Day at the Nannen Arboretum
DESCRIPTION:What is Arbor Day?\nArbor Day is an annual observance that celebrates the role of trees in our lives and promotes tree planting and care. The idea for Arbor Day in the United States originated in Nebraska City\, Nebraska. J. Sterling Morton and his wife\, Caroline\, were lovers of nature and the home they established in Nebraska was quickly planted with trees\, shrubs and flowers. In 1872\, the Nebraska State Board of Agriculture accepted a resolution by Morton to “set aside one day to plant trees\, both forest and fruit.” The Board declared April 10\, 1872\, Arbor Day offering prizes to the counties and individuals that properly planted the largest number of trees on that day. More than one million trees were planted in Nebraska on the first Arbor Day. J. Sterling Morton became known as the “Founder of Arbor Day.” \nShortly after this 1872 observance\, other states passed legislation to observe Arbor Day each year with appropriate ceremonies. New York State celebrates Arbor Day on the last Friday in April\, the 24th this year. \nPlanting trees is an act of kindness and optimism. The trees we plant clean the air\, beautify our neighborhoods\, provide homes for wildlife\, conserve energy and topsoil\, and help keep the atmosphere in balance. Life is just better when we live among the trees. \nPlease join us for our Arbor Day celebration on Friday\, April 24\, 2020\, 11:00 am at the Nannen Arboretum in the Town Center building. Town and Village representatives will make a proclamation declaring April 24 2020 as Arbor Day in Ellicottville NY and an arbor day tree will be planted on the arboretum grounds. Refreshments will be available. \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Continental Glacier and Cattaraugus County
DESCRIPTION:The Nannen Arboretum Society of Ellicottville\, NY is proud to present ‘The Continental Glacier and Cattaraugus County.’ The presenter\, Tim Baird\, is a retired science teacher\, avid and knowledgeable birder\, and has a lifelong interest in the geological history of our area. Baird says\, “During the Pleistocene (glacial) epoch\, nearly all of New York State was covered by ice. In some regions it was a mile or more thick. Today there is much evidence showing that the continental glacier impacted the land area that is now New York State. Most of Cattaraugus County was ice covered. However\, the area to the south and immediately north of the current course of the Allegany River\, including nearly all of Allegany State Park\, lay beyond the extent of the ice. Known as the Salamanca re-entrant\, it is the only unglaciated part of New York State. Although not directly covered by ice\, the region of the Salamanca re-entrant was impacted by the ice to the north.” This program will summarize the glacial period in Cattaraugus County and examine some of the noticeable effects left on the region following the retreat of the glacier. Did you know that the ice helped form lakes\, and changed the course of the river? We are all familiar with Zoar Valley and the rocks at Rock City\, Panama Rocks\, and Thunder Rocks. You may\, however\, not know about the true details of these areas. Please join us to learn some fascinating facts!
